The gaming world is abuzz with anticipation as whispers of a PlayStation 5 Pro release later this year gain momentum. Recent leaks suggest the upcoming console will deliver performance levels akin to AMD’s Radeon RX 7700 XT graphics card, promising a significant leap in graphical fidelity.
According to leaker ‘Kepler’, the PS5 Pro will match the RX 7700 XT in rasterization performance, but boast even greater ray tracing capabilities. This is attributed to the inclusion of elements from the upcoming RDNA 4 GPU architecture, combined with innovative tweaks employed by AMD in the custom chip designed for the PS5 Pro. This information echoes a previous report from May 2022, which accurately predicted the PS5 Pro’s arrival in 2024.
While the standard PS5 relies on a Zen 2-based CPU with 8 cores and 16 threads clocked at up to 3.5GHz, coupled with an RDNA 2 GPU boasting 16 WGPs (Work Group Processors) or 36 CUs (Compute Units) at up to 2.23GHz, the rumored PS5 Pro is said to maintain the same Zen 2 CPU core structure but push its clock speed to a higher 3.85GHz. The heart of the upgrade, however, lies in its GPU. It’s rumored to feature RDNA 3 optimizations and RDNA 4 technology for ray tracing, resulting in a significant bump to 30 WGPs or 60 CUs, effectively doubling the compute units. Although the clock speed dips slightly to 2.18GHz, this upgraded GPU promises a formidable 33.5 TFLOPs of FP32 compute performance, a substantial 3x increase over the standard PS5. The console will also sport the same 16GB of GDDR6 memory, but at a faster 18Gbps.
While Sony remains tight-lipped about its plans, rumors suggest a potential unveiling at the Tokyo Games Show in September. This would place us just a few weeks away from potentially witnessing the official announcement of this highly anticipated console upgrade. Gamers are eagerly awaiting the official confirmation and a glimpse into the future of PlayStation gaming.
