The long-awaited day has finally arrived: PlayStation VR2 is now officially compatible with PC gaming. This means that PC gamers can now use the high-end VR headset, originally designed for the PlayStation 5 console, to experience the thousands of games available in the SteamVR library. Notable titles, including the critically acclaimed Half-Life: Alyx, can now be enjoyed on the PSVR2.
However, there’s a catch. To utilize the PSVR2 headset with a PC, you’ll need to purchase the official PlayStation VR2 PC Adapter, which is currently available for $59.99 USD from select retailers and directly from Sony. This additional expense, alongside the $549.99 cost of the PlayStation VR2 headset itself, may make it less appealing than initially thought for some gamers.
Furthermore, certain key features of the PSVR2, such as HDR, headset feedback, eye-tracking, adaptive triggers, and haptic feedback, are currently unavailable on PC. Sony has yet to confirm or announce if these features will be implemented in the future. On the positive side, foveated rendering and 3D audio are supported on the PC platform.
The allure of PlayStation VR2 for PC gaming stems from its impressive specifications. It boasts an OLED display with a resolution of 2000 x 2040 pixels per eye, offering smooth gameplay with support for both 90Hz and 120Hz refresh rates. The headset also features a wide field of view up to 110 degrees, enhancing the immersive experience. While this powerful technology is now available to PC gamers, the requirement of purchasing an additional adapter might dampen the enthusiasm for some.
Alongside the announcement of the global availability of the PlayStation VR2 PC Adapter and SteamVR support for the PSVR2 headset, Sony has outlined the minimum PC requirements for using the headset with a computer. These requirements align with typical standards for entry-level VR experiences on PC.
