Plug Power, Inc. (PLUG) is making strides in its global expansion by partnering with Carreras Grupo Logístico to establish a groundbreaking green hydrogen ecosystem in Spain. This initiative involves converting Carreras Grupo Logístico’s facility in Masquefa, Barcelona into a hydrogen-powered logistics hub through a fuel cell technology validation project.
The collaboration will see the replacement of lead-acid battery-powered forklifts with hydrogen fuel cells, promoting decarbonization and enhancing operational efficiency. This move aligns with Plug Power’s commitment to driving sustainable solutions in the logistics sector.
“We are excited to work with Carreras Grupo Logístico to usher in a landmark moment: the first hydrogen-powered logistics site in Spain,” stated Plug CEO Andy Marsh. The shift to green hydrogen promises to boost energy efficiency, productivity, and sustainability while reducing operational costs.
The project at Masquefa will serve as a testing ground to evaluate the performance of Plug’s technology against traditional battery solutions. Insights gleaned from this project will pave the way for the broader adoption of hydrogen fuel cell technology in Spain and across Carreras Grupo Logístico’s extensive network of 46 warehouses.
If successful, Plug will provide Carreras Grupo Logístico with a comprehensive green hydrogen ecosystem, encompassing hydrogen fuel cells, a 1 MW electrolyzer, and a hydrogen refueling station. “This strategic collaboration highlights the transformative potential of hydrogen-powered solutions to achieve the twin goals of decarbonization and operational gains in the logistics sector,” CEO Marsh emphasized.
This initiative represents a significant step towards Plug Power’s ambition to establish a global hydrogen economy. The company’s expansion into Spain underscores the growing interest and investment in green hydrogen solutions worldwide, paving the way for a more sustainable future for the logistics industry.
