Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a historic visit to Brunei on Tuesday, inaugurating the new Chancery of the High Commission of India in Bandar Seri Begawan, the nation’s capital. This impressive chancery complex stands as a testament to India’s rich cultural heritage, seamlessly blending traditional motifs with modern design elements. The use of elegant claddings and durable Kota stones enhances its aesthetic appeal, creating a harmonious blend of classic and contemporary styles.
The Prime Minister’s Office press release highlighted that the design not only pays homage to India’s rich cultural heritage but also creates a serene and inviting atmosphere. During the inauguration ceremony, Prime Minister Modi lit a lamp and unveiled a plaque. He also took the opportunity to interact with members of the Indian community present, expressing his appreciation for their contribution as a vital bridge between India and Brunei, strengthening the bilateral ties between the two nations.
The first wave of Indians arrived in Brunei during the 1920s, coinciding with the discovery of oil in the region. Currently, approximately 14,000 Indians reside in Brunei, making significant contributions to the nation’s healthcare and education sectors through the work of doctors and teachers.
Upon his arrival in Brunei, Prime Minister Modi was warmly welcomed with a ceremonial reception. He expressed his gratitude to Crown Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah for the welcoming gesture at the airport.
“Landed in Brunei Darussalam. Looking forward to strong ties between our nations, especially in boosting commercial and cultural linkages. I thank Crown Prince His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah for welcoming me at the airport,” PM Modi shared on X, formerly known as Twitter.
The Indian diaspora in Brunei extended a warm welcome to Prime Minister Modi, engaging in heartwarming interactions, such as a young girl showcasing a painting depicting the Indian Tricolour alongside the Prime Minister. The gathering, filled with enthusiastic supporters waving the Indian flag, cheered for the Prime Minister as he reciprocated their warmth.
The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized Brunei’s vital role as a partner in India’s ‘Act East’ Policy and Indo-Pacific Vision. The statement highlighted the strong foundation of friendship between India and Brunei, characterized by mutual respect and understanding on bilateral and multilateral issues. The two nations share deep historical, cultural, and traditional ties spanning over a millennium.
This historic visit marks the first-ever bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Brunei. It also coincides with the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. During his visit, Prime Minister Modi will engage in bilateral discussions with Brunei’s leadership, covering all aspects of bilateral relations and cooperation, and exploring new areas of collaboration.
After concluding the first leg of his two-nation visit, Prime Minister Modi will travel to Singapore on September 4 and 5.
