Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be making official visits to Poland and Ukraine from August 21-23, according to the Ministry of External Affairs. This trip carries significant historical and diplomatic weight, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Poland in 45 years. It also coincides with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between New Delhi and Warsaw, which will be celebrated in 2024.
During his time in Poland, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to hold talks with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and President Andrzej Duda. He will also engage with the Indian community, business leaders, and prominent intellectuals. This visit signifies the growing strength of the bilateral relationship, particularly in the realm of defense cooperation. India recently reopened the defense wing at its embassy in Warsaw, reflecting the strengthening ties between the two nations.
Following his visit to Poland, Prime Minister Modi will travel to Ukraine at the invitation of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This will be the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Ukraine since the two countries established diplomatic ties in 1992. The visit comes at a crucial time, with Ukraine grappling with the ongoing conflict.
The Prime Minister’s engagements in Kyiv will encompass a wide range of areas, including political, trade, economic, investment, education, cultural, people-to-people exchanges, humanitarian assistance, and more. He will also interact with the Indian community, including students. This landmark visit aims to further consolidate and expand the bilateral ties between India and Ukraine.
India has provided significant humanitarian support to Ukraine since the beginning of the conflict, delivering 16 packages containing vital supplies like medicines, power generators, and medical equipment, totaling over 135 tons of material. Further initiatives to support Ukraine are being explored.
The official website of the Ukrainian President has confirmed that Prime Minister Modi’s visit will coincide with Ukraine’s National Flag Day on August 23. During the visit, both sides will discuss bilateral and multilateral cooperation, and multiple agreements are expected to be signed between India and Ukraine.
