Prime Minister Narendra Modi made history on Tuesday by becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Brunei on a bilateral trip. Invited by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, PM Modi received a ceremonial welcome upon his arrival, greeted by His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, Crown Prince.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi expressed his anticipation for strengthening ties between India and Brunei, particularly in boosting commercial and cultural connections. He thanked the Crown Prince for the warm reception at the airport.
During his visit, PM Modi engaged in a series of meaningful engagements, showcasing the growing bond between the two nations. He paid homage at the iconic Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, a landmark built by the 28th Sultan of Brunei, the father of the current Sultan. He was welcomed by Brunei’s Minister of Religious Affairs Pehin Dato Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin.
One of the key highlights of PM Modi’s visit was the inauguration of the new Chancery premises of the High Commission of India in Brunei. The chancery complex embodies a blend of traditional Indian motifs and modern design, showcasing a sense of Indianness through its architecture and lush tree plantations. The Prime Minister’s Office highlighted the use of elegant claddings and durable Kota stones, creating an aesthetically pleasing space that harmonizes classic and contemporary elements.
PM Modi also took the opportunity to interact with members of the Indian diaspora in Brunei, expressing his gratitude for their contributions as a bridge between the two countries and their role in strengthening bilateral ties. With an estimated 14,000 Indians residing in Brunei, their presence and impact are significant. Notably, the contributions of Indian doctors and teachers to Brunei’s healthcare and education sectors have been widely recognized.
In a heartwarming gesture, PM Modi engaged with a young girl who presented him with a painting depicting the Indian Tricolor and herself alongside the Prime Minister. This interaction symbolizes the strong bond between India and the people of Brunei, particularly the younger generation.
