Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be making a significant trip to the United States from September 21 to 23, marking a busy agenda filled with high-level meetings and international engagements. This trip promises to be a pivotal one in strengthening India’s global partnerships and addressing pressing global issues.
The heart of the visit will be the participation in the Quad Leaders’ Summit in Wilmington, Delaware, the hometown of US President Joe Biden. This will be the fourth in-person summit for the Quad, a strategic alliance comprising India, the US, Japan, and Australia. The leaders will review the progress achieved in the past year and lay out the agenda for the future, focusing on key areas of cooperation including security, technology, and economic development.
Beyond the Quad Summit, PM Modi will engage in bilateral meetings with various world leaders, including President Biden, on the sidelines of the event. Key discussions are expected to center on the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) and a new India-US Drug Framework, with the potential for the signing of related agreements. These engagements underline the growing strategic partnership between India and the US, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region.
A unique initiative on the agenda is the ‘Cancer Moonshot’ event, where the Quad nations aim to collaborate on innovative strategies to combat cancer. The focus will be on preventing, detecting, treating, and mitigating the impact of cancer, with a specific goal of reducing the burden of cervical cancer in the Indo-Pacific region.
Following the Quad Summit, PM Modi will travel to New York to participate in the Summit of the Future (SOTF) at the United Nations. He will address the gathering of world leaders, highlighting India’s commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and tackling pressing global challenges, including those related to global governance.
PM Modi’s visit will also include interactions with the Indian diaspora, a technology roundtable with leading tech CEOs, and a series of bilateral meetings. The technology roundtable will offer a platform for discussions on the tech investment landscape and opportunities in the US.
The Ministry of External Affairs has indicated that the Quad Leaders’ Summit will also include a joint statement, a fact sheet, and a separate fact sheet for the Cancer Moonshot event. This year’s meeting is also expected to be a ‘farewell event’ for President Biden and Prime Minister Kishida of Japan.
While a meeting between PM Modi and former US President Donald Trump has not been confirmed, the Ministry of External Affairs has stated that they are currently trying to schedule several meetings based on available time. Updates on confirmed meetings will be provided as they become available.
