A dramatic incident unfolded in Pune on Friday when a Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) truck fell into a gaping sinkhole that suddenly appeared in the parking area of the City Post Office in the Budhwar Peth area. The truck, which was engaged in drainage cleaning work, was caught off guard as the ground gave way beneath it.
Fortunately, the driver managed to escape the truck unscathed, but the incident has sent shockwaves through the city, raising concerns about the state of infrastructure in the area.
The incident happened around 4 pm, as the truck was slowly moving in the densely populated locality. The video, captured by a bystander, quickly went viral on social media.
In the video, the truck is seen moving slowly before the ground abruptly collapses, swallowing the vehicle up to its rear wheels. Locals can be seen rushing to the scene, frantically trying to help the driver.
The Fire Department received a call at 4.15 pm and immediately dispatched teams to the site. Along with the truck, several parked two-wheelers were also swallowed by the sinkhole.
The Fire Department officials, using specialized equipment, are working tirelessly to pull the truck and two-wheelers out of the sinkhole.
While the exact cause of the sinkhole remains under investigation, officials have indicated that ongoing underground work for the Pune Metro project could be a contributing factor.
The incident has sparked widespread debate on social media, with many users expressing concerns about infrastructure and safety in the city.
“Zameen ke niche vikas khojne gya hoga” (He must have been looking for development underground) quipped one user. Another user lamented, “If this is the situation of roads in Pune, imagine village roads…. Too much corruption.”
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of ensuring proper infrastructure maintenance and monitoring, particularly in urban areas with ongoing infrastructure projects.
