Poland’s Limited Options in Providing Patriot Systems to Ukraine
Poland is unable to contribute any US-made Patriot missile systems to Ukraine’s defense efforts, Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated on Monday. Unlike certain other NATO nations, Poland does not have any such systems at its disposal for donation.
The long-range air defense system has become a critical item on Ukraine’s wish list after Russia targeted Ukrainian power plants with missile strikes. Germany recently committed to providing an additional Patriot battery, prompting Chancellor Olaf Scholz to encourage other NATO members to contribute more systems to Ukraine.
However, Prime Minister Tusk clarified that Poland does not have any spare Patriot systems. The battery currently stationed near the city of Rzeszow is under American control and responsibility for protecting southeastern Poland. Warsaw has no such systems to donate, according to Tusk.
Despite this limitation, Tusk emphasized Poland’s unwavering support for Ukraine. He highlighted Poland’s commendable efforts in providing assistance through other means, suggesting that there are alternative weapon systems that could benefit Ukraine in its defense against Russia.
