Poland Ready to Host NATO Nuclear Weapons Amidst Russia-Belarus Nuclear Relocation

Polish President Andrzej Duda has stated that Poland stands ready to host nuclear weapons from other NATO member states should the decision be made. This statement comes amidst reports of Russia relocating its nuclear weapons to Belarus, a move that has raised concerns within the alliance.

President Duda made these remarks in an interview published in the Fakt tabloid on Monday. He emphasized Poland’s awareness of its obligations within the 32-member alliance, which includes the United States.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who shares President Duda’s views on national security, expressed that Poland’s security and military strength are his top priorities. However, he stressed the need for urgent discussions with President Duda regarding the proposed hosting of nuclear weapons.

Tusk emphasized the significance and seriousness of such a decision, highlighting the necessity of thorough preparation and consensus among all parties involved.

The Kremlin has responded to this news by asserting that Russia will take the necessary steps to ensure its security if the United States deploys nuclear weapons in Poland. Dmitry Peskov, a Kremlin spokesperson, stated that the military will analyze the situation and implement appropriate retaliatory measures to safeguard Russia’s well-being.

Currently, the United States possesses nuclear facilities in several allied countries, including Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Turkey, as part of NATO’s nuclear sharing program. Washington maintains complete control and custody over the deployed weapons.

Seven NATO members have dual-capability aircraft capable of carrying both conventional bombs and nuclear warheads, available for use if necessary. Poland has been an unwavering supporter of neighboring Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia.
