Popeyes Levels Up Breakfast with Grilled Chicken Option and Breakfast Wraps

Popeyes is known for its Louisiana fried chicken, but it’s also slowly becoming a firm favorite for breakfast on the go. Back in February, the US fast-food chain rolled out a nationwide breakfast menu which included ‘levelled up’ classics like bacon rolls, muffins, and hash browns with added Cajun seasoning.

The Big Cajun Breakfast Roll and the Cajun Hash Brown received rave reviews as part of a Metro taste test, with the latter being given an impressive 10/10 rating and some staff even controversially claiming it was ‘better’ than the McDonald’s offering.

And now Popeyes is expanding its morning menu, introducing an industry-first and two other brand-new items. The chain is shaking up the fast-food breakfast game by trialing a grilled chicken breakfast option, making it the first quick-service restaurant in the UK to offer grilled chicken for breakfast. Interesting…

Customers at selected Popeyes restaurants will be able to substitute bacon or sausage in their breakfast order for a herby chicken sausage, complete with the chain’s signature seasoning. You could add this to a breakfast roll, the Big Cajun Roll, or perhaps try it in one of the brand-new wraps.

Priced at £4.99 each, the Big Brekkie Wrap and the Big Cajun Wrap contain a sausage patty, two free-range eggs, three pieces of streaky bacon, gooey American cheese, and a hash brown, all in a soft toasted wrap.

The only difference between the two is that the Cajun version contains a Cajun Hash Brown, as well as Cajun Ketchup, while the Big Brekkie features a traditional hash brown and is served with either Heinz Ketchup or HP sauce.

Metro.co.uk gave both a try and it’s fair to say the team were pretty taken with the new items, proclaiming them to be ‘saucey’, a ‘delight’, and ‘on par with the McDonald’s breakfast wrap’. All very high praise!

Lifestyle reporter Eleanor Noyce said: ‘The Big Cajun Wrap was definitely jam-packed — but it held together very nicely. Popeyes is generous with the Cajun Ketchup which didn’t go amiss as I love a saucey wrap — but it did all gather towards the bottom which was a little bit messy!

‘The hash browns were lovely and crispy too, and added to the texture but not in an overwhelming way — sometimes I think too much crammed inside a wrap can literally be too much, but they pulled it off. All in all, a delight!’

While lifestyle reporter Gregory Robinson added: ‘It feels quite robust and well-structured and the eggs are soft and the sausage is nicely seasoned. I’d say it’s on par with the McDonald’s Breakfast Wrap.’

The Big Cajun Wrap and Big Brekkie Wrap are available nationwide at Popeyes from today (May 14) served in restaurants, drive-thrus, and via delivery until 11 am. This excludes Westfield Stratford, Chelmsford, and Derby.

The new Chicken Brekkie range is also available now in Romford, Ealing, Leicester, Wembley, Ilford, and Walthamstow.

Dave Hoskins, head of food at Popeyes, said: ‘Since we rolled out our Breakfast Menu nationwide earlier this year, our fans have been loving starting their day with a kick of New Orleans spice — with over a third of breakfast meals sold featuring our signature Cajun Hash Brown or Cajun Ketchup.

‘Coupled with the recent rise in popularity of Wraps on our menu, introducing Breakfast Wrap options was a no-brainer. By taking a classic breakfast item and adding our own Popeyes twist, we’ve created something that will get people’s mornings poppin’ with a healthy pinch of New Orleans spirit.

‘And for those who are seeking pork alternatives for breakfast, we’re thrilled to trial a chicken version of our breakfast range in selected restaurants, featuring our new delicious Herby Chicken Sausage with Popeyes signature seasoning.

‘We’re particularly proud to be the first quick-service brand to launch grilled chicken options for breakfast helping us cater for those who love chicken for breakfast and importantly, those seeking Halal options. We can’t wait for our fans to start their day with these delicious new additions.’
