The Port of Oakland is seeking a developer for its 50-acre Howard Property, a prime waterfront site located along the Oakland waterfront. The Port has issued a Request for Qualifications (RFQ), marking a new chapter in the development of this former marine terminal.
The Howard Property, inactive for cargo vessel operations since 2013, offers a unique opportunity for a transformational development project. The site, bordered by industrial activities to the west and Jack London Square, a vibrant entertainment hub, to the east, presents a canvas for various potential uses. The Port is open to exploring diverse proposals, including maritime, light industrial, commercial, recreational, or water-related developments.
Jonathan Veach, Port of Oakland Chief Real Estate Officer, emphasized the significant economic potential of the project, stating, “The Port has a major opportunity to create a transformational development project that can provide critical economic benefits to Oakland and the region.” The Port aims to attract development partners who can create good-paying, local jobs and fully activate the Howard Property.
This new RFQ follows the expiration of a previous agreement with the Oakland A’s for a potential mixed-use ballpark project. While the property has been utilized for short-term rentals, container parking, depot operations, and other ancillary maritime services, the Port is now seeking a long-term, sustainable development solution.
The Port’s leadership is confident that the next phase of development will seamlessly integrate with the surrounding industrial and entertainment districts, creating a vibrant and economically beneficial space. The RFQ invites proposals that embrace creativity and sustainability, aiming to transform the Howard Property into a thriving hub that revitalizes the Oakland waterfront.
