Postgraduate Doctor Found Murdered After Sexual Assault in Kolkata Hospital, Accused Remanded

A horrific incident has shaken Kolkata, with the discovery of the body of a postgraduate trainee doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The victim, a chest medicine specialist, was found dead inside the hospital’s seminar hall on Friday morning. The initial autopsy report revealed multiple injury marks, including bleeding from both eyes and mouth, injuries on the face, and nail marks. The report also noted bleeding from the victim’s private parts and injuries to her belly, left leg, neck, and right hand. The police, citing the autopsy report, have ruled out suicide and confirmed the murder.

A senior police officer confirmed that the crime took place between 3-6 am, stating that the victim’s neck bone was broken, suggesting she was strangled and then smothered. The police have formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the case. The accused, who has been remanded to 14-day police custody, has been charged with rape and murder under sections 64 and 103 of the Indian Penal Code.

The incident has sparked a political storm, with the BJP and other opposition parties demanding a CBI probe. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, however, has vowed to seek the death penalty for the accused and has instructed officials to expedite the trial by moving it to a fast-track court. She also offered to cooperate with any investigating agency if the opposition parties did not trust the state government.

The accused was tracked down after police found a bluetooth headset at the crime scene. CCTV footage confirmed his presence at the crime spot. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of women, particularly in healthcare settings. The victim’s colleagues have recounted that she had dinner with her juniors around 2 am and then went to the seminar room, as there was no separate on-call room, to take some rest. The gruesome discovery of her body in the morning has sent shockwaves through the medical community and the city at large.
