India’s hockey goalkeeper PR Sreejesh and pistol shooter Manu Bhaker will proudly carry the Indian flag at the closing ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics on August 11th. This announcement was made by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), recognizing Sreejesh’s remarkable career and Manu Bhaker’s exceptional achievements.
Sreejesh, who recently retired from hockey after leading the Indian men’s team to a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics, was selected as the flagbearer. He played a pivotal role in India’s victory over Spain in the bronze medal match. The 36-year-old goalkeeper was also a member of the team that won bronze at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. His dedication and performance have earned him widespread admiration and respect in the sporting world.
The IOA expressed delight in nominating Sreejesh as the joint flagbearer, highlighting his significant contributions to Indian hockey and sports. IOA President Dr. PT Usha emphasized that Sreejesh was a popular and emotional choice, supported by the Chef de Mission Gagan Narang and the entire Indian contingent.
Dr. Usha revealed that javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, who secured his second successive Olympic medal with a silver on Thursday, wholeheartedly agreed to Sreejesh’s selection. Neeraj expressed his admiration for Sreejesh, stating that he would have suggested Sreejesh’s name even if he hadn’t been asked.
Manu Bhaker, the first Indian athlete since independence to win multiple medals in a single Olympic Games, was previously announced as the flagbearer. She secured bronze medals in the 10m Air Pistol Women and the 10m Air Pistol Mixed Team (with Sarabjot Singh) at the Paris Olympics.
As the closing ceremony approaches, the Indian contingent will be looking forward to celebrating their achievements at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Sreejesh and Manu Bhaker will represent the spirit of Indian sportsmanship and excellence, leaving a lasting mark on the global stage.
