The beloved 1998 witchy comedy ‘Practical Magic’ is getting a long-awaited sequel, with Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman set to reprise their iconic roles.
Based on the spooky novel of the same name by Alice Hoffman, the original film starred a pre-‘Miss Congeniality’ Bullock and a pre-‘Eyes Wide Shut’ Kidman as sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, descendants of a long line of witches. The film followed the sisters as they became embroiled in a supernatural cover-up after Sally accidentally killed her sister’s abusive ex-boyfriend and then attempted to resurrect him.
In 2019, HBO Max announced plans for a ‘Practical Magic’ spin-off series titled ‘Rules of Magic,’ based on Hoffman’s prequel novel. However, that project failed to materialize. Now, fans of the cult classic have even better news: a sequel is officially in the works.
The buzz began on June 9 with a midnight TikTok announcement, a nod to the film’s ‘midnight margaritas’ scene, revealing that ‘Practical Magic’ was now available to stream on HBO Max. The real announcement that ‘Practical Magic 2’ is happening came the following morning.
Akiva Goldsman, one of the co-writers of the original film’s script, is set to pen the screenplay this time around. Bullock and Kidman are also expected to sign on as producers.
While plot details are yet to be revealed, fans are eagerly anticipating the return of the beloved characters and the further exploration of the magical world they inhabit. The original film also featured a stellar supporting cast, including Stockard Channing, Dianne Wiest, and Evan Rachel Wood, and it remains to be seen if they will reprise their roles in the sequel.
As the wait continues for the reveal of plot details and a release date, fans can re-watch the original ‘Practical Magic’ on HBO Max and celebrate the return of the Owens sisters.
