Six-months pregnant Ana-Maria Guja went missing on April 12 and was last seen getting into a car with a former police officer. After a week-long search, her body was discovered on Saturday in a forest near the village of Chițcanii.
The 19-year-old’s death has sent shockwaves through Moldova, with over 900 volunteers assisting in the search for her. Investigators believe that she mistakenly entered the wrong car, instead of the one arranged by her boyfriend.
A 45-year-old former police officer has been arrested for her murder. He is currently in custody and not cooperating with the investigation. During searches of his home and car, police discovered several items belonging to women.
The victim, who was studying pedagogy, had gotten into a car on August Street at 9 pm on April 12 and left in an unknown direction. Police have released a statement confirming that the vehicle in which she entered has been located and its driver identified.
Authorities have yet to release further details regarding her death or the ongoing investigation. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to assist her family with funeral expenses.
