Two Premier League footballers, both aged 19, have been suspended by their club after being arrested on suspicion of rape. The pair, who both play for the same club, were arrested over the weekend but on separate days. The first player was formally arrested on suspicion of assault and aiding and abetting a rape. He spent the night in prison, before being released on bail. A day later, a second player was arrested and questioned on suspicion of rape. The Sun say both players have been suspended by their club, pending the outcome of a police investigation. A police spokesman said: ‘Officers have arrested two men following a report of a rape.
A 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault and aiding and abetting a rape. A second 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rape.
‘Both men have since been released on police bail.’
The Premier League introduced mandatory sexual consent training at clubs, for both players and staff, during 2022. It followed a string of incidents involving players in the Premier League, including Mason Greenwood and Benjamin Mendy.
