Premier League Players Arrested in Rape Probe, Teammates Shocked
Two 19-year-old Premier League footballers have been arrested in connection with a rape investigation and suspended by their club. The alleged incident occurred on Friday night, and the victim contacted police hours later to file a formal complaint.
One player was arrested on suspicion of assault and aiding and abetting a rape, while the other was arrested on suspicion of rape. Both players were later released on bail pending further inquiries.
Teammates and club officials were reportedly left reeling from the news of the arrests. A source told the media, “News began to filter through the club on Monday morning. Everyone is understandably shocked at what has unfolded. The club is also trying to get to the bottom of what has happened. But with an ongoing police investigation and the seriousness of the allegations both players have been suspended.”
The alleged rape is said to have taken place on Friday night. The alleged victim contacted officers hours later and filed a formal complaint.
The Premier League has been plagued by a series of high-profile sex scandals in recent years. Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood, 22, was suspended in 2022 after he was arrested for attempted rape. The case was later dropped, and he is now on loan at Spanish side Getafe.
Former Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy, 29, was cleared of multiple rapes after two trials last year. He is now at French side Lorient.
Their cases and others prompted the Premier League to launch sexual consent lessons for all players.
