Prepare for an Unforgettable Marine Encounter: Manta Ray Season in the Maldives

Immerse yourself in the captivating marine spectacle of the Maldives Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, where the largest known gathering of manta rays takes place from May to November. The Maldives Manta Conservation Initiative (MMCI), based at Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru, is preparing for the prime dates of this extraordinary phenomenon.

During the 2023 season, researchers witnessed a surge in sightings, recording 6,691 manta rays in the waters surrounding the Resort, a testament to the archipelago’s status as home to the world’s most significant population of reef manta rays. Hanifaru Bay, renowned for its exceptional manta congregations, accounted for an impressive 82% of all sightings.

Last season also marked the identification of 225 new manta rays, bringing the total number to 5,831. The encounter with three oceanic manta rays, among the largest of their kind, was a particularly memorable highlight. The discovery of a juvenile manta in Reethi Lagoon near Four Seasons Resort Landaa Giraavaru added to the season’s excitement.

In addition to manta sightings, the 2023 season yielded a record number of whale shark sightings in the plankton-rich waters of Baa Atoll. These gentle giants, reaching lengths of up to 18 meters, further exemplify the remarkable diversity of marine life in this region.

The Maldives Manta Conservation Programme, the flagship project of Manta Trust, transitioned to an NGO status in 2023, underscoring its commitment to preserving manta rays and their habitats globally. Guests at Landaa Giraavaru can partake in immersive manta experiences, including Manta-on-Call alerts, private cruises, and the Trainee Manta Biologist program for young environmental enthusiasts.

The Maldives’ first life-size Hologram Room at the Marine Discovery Centre offers guests a virtual underwater encounter with the locally identified manta rays of Baa Atoll without leaving dry land. MMCI’s ongoing research contributes not only to the protection of these gentle giants but also aids in predicting mass manta aggregation dates, enhancing the chances of unforgettable encounters with these magnificent creatures and their whale shark counterparts.
