President Droupadi Murmu showcased her love for sports by engaging in a friendly badminton match with acclaimed shuttler Saina Nehwal at the Badminton Court in Rashtrapati Bhavan, Delhi. A post on X, shared by Rashtrapati Bhavan, highlighted the President’s passion for sports, emphasizing her natural inclination towards active participation. The post stated, “The President’s inspiring step is in keeping with India’s emergence as a badminton-power house, with women-players making a great impact on the world stage.”
The President’s engagement with sports continued as she unveiled the prestigious Durand Cup trophy, along with the President’s Cup and Shimla Trophy, at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The 133rd edition of the Durand Cup football tournament, a highly anticipated event marking the commencement of the Indian Football season, is scheduled to kick off on July 27th, with the final slated for August 31st.
In her address, President Murmu acknowledged the global popularity of football, highlighting the captivating atmosphere created when professional players compete in front of enthusiastic fans. “When professional footballers play in front of thousands of fans, the excitement of the players and spectators increases manifold,” she stated. The President extended her well wishes to all participating players in the Durand Cup Tournament 2024, emphasizing the significance of healthy competition and sportsmanship.
“Whether they win or lose, there should be healthy competition in the game and they should respect other teams,” the President advised, acknowledging the inherent passion and intensity of the sport. She urged players to channel their emotions effectively and strive for their best performance. The President expressed confidence that all players would display determination and a true spirit of sportsmanship throughout the tournament.
Murmu concluded her address by encouraging all football enthusiasts to actively contribute towards elevating the level of football in India. Saina Nehwal, a recipient of the prestigious Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awards, is scheduled to deliver a talk and engage with the audience at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre on Thursday, as part of the ‘Her Story – My Story’ lecture series featuring women Padma Awardees.
