Sanjoy Roy, the prime accused in the alleged rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, underwent a lie detector test on Sunday. The test was conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) at the Presidency Jail where Roy is currently lodged.
Prior to the test, Roy had maintained his innocence, telling a Kolkata court judge that he was being ‘framed’. When asked for his consent to the polygraph test, he reportedly broke down in court, claiming he had not ‘committed a crime’ and that the test would ‘prove his innocence.’ According to reports, Roy has been muttering since being sent to jail, claiming he knows ‘nothing’ about the incident and requesting to be allowed to ‘sleep peacefully.’ This stands in stark contrast to the reported ‘don’t care’ attitude he displayed during his arrest, where the Kolkata Police attested to his lack of remorse.
The polygraph tests are part of an ongoing investigation. Two more individuals will undergo the test at the CBI office in Kolkata on Sunday. On Saturday, four individuals, including RG Kar Hospital’s former principal Sandip Ghosh, underwent the polygraph test. A team of polygraph specialists from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in Delhi has been flown to Kolkata to conduct these tests.
Roy was arrested by the Kolkata Police on August 10, a day after the body of the 31-year-old doctor was found in the Seminar hall of the medical college. The discovery of a CCTV footage and a Bluetooth headphone near the victim’s body led to Roy’s arrest. Investigation notes suggest that Roy was allegedly seen entering the seminar hall around 4 am.
Sanjoy Roy (33) was employed as a civic volunteer by the Kolkata Police since 2019. He is a trained boxer and allegedly built relationships with several senior police officers, leading to his transfer to the Kolkata Police Welfare Board and posting at the police outpost at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Despite the evidence against him, Roy has denied all allegations.
