A year after the release of his controversial memoir ‘Spare,’ Prince Harry has shed light on the origin of its title. In an interview with OK Magazine, the Duke of Sussex revealed that his father, King Charles, nicknamed him ‘Spare’ after his birth.
The nickname stemmed from Charles’ response to Princess Diana giving birth to a second son. As quoted by OK Magazine, Harry recounted his father’s words: “Wonderful! Now you’ve given me an heir and a spare – my work is done.” This seemingly casual remark has resonated deeply with Harry, who has publicly acknowledged his resentment towards the ‘Spare’ label.
In fact, The Guardian highlighted that the ‘Spare’ moniker serves as an underlying theme throughout Harry’s book. He explores how the nickname impacted his childhood, schooling, royal career, relationship with his parents and brother, and his journey with Meghan Markle, encompassing courtship, marriage, and parenthood.
While Harry celebrated his 40th birthday in August, reports suggest that he continues to reflect on his past. However, some sources have suggested that Meghan Markle is encouraging Harry to move on from the past.
