As Prince Harry’s US visa application undergoes review by a federal judge, legal experts have weighed in on whether his royal titles would be affected by a potential extended stay or citizenship in the United States. According to New York-based lawyer Gita Gorji, Harry may not be required to relinquish his royal titles if he remains in the US or opts for citizenship.
Gorji cited Article I, Section 9, Clause 8 of the US Constitution, which prohibits the US government from granting titles of nobility. However, she emphasized that the Constitution does not explicitly require naturalizing citizens to renounce foreign titles unless they assume government positions.
“Unless he were to hold public office, the US Constitution only specifically forbids the US government from granting titles of nobility,” Gorji stated. “It says nothing about titles conferred by foreign governments.”
Gorji’s remarks come amidst Prince Harry’s ongoing US visa case, which has reportedly caused him significant stress. Royal author Tom Quinn quoted Harry’s friends as saying that the prince is “horribly stressed” about the situation.
It remains to be seen how Harry’s visa application will be resolved and whether he will ultimately decide to stay in the US on a more permanent basis. However, the legal experts’ insights suggest that his royal titles may not be necessarily compromised if he does so.
