Princess Kate and Princess Eugenie’s Formative Years at Marlborough College

The exclusive Marlborough College holds a special place in the hearts of several members of the British Royal Family. Princess Kate, then known as Kate Middleton, spent four formative years at the prestigious institution from 1996 to 2000. The future Princess of Wales arrived at the co-ed boarding school for pupils aged 13 to 18 as a shy 14-year-old. However, during her time at Marlborough, she blossomed into a confident and accomplished young woman, excelling in hockey and becoming co-captain of the tennis team. Kate resided in the all-girls boarding house, Elmhurst, and former classmates recall her indulging in Marmite sandwiches, listening to her Walkman, and watching the popular sitcom “Friends.” Marlborough College has also welcomed other members of Kate’s family, including Princess Eugenie, who attended the school from 2003 to 2008. The Princess later returned to open the newly refurbished Memorial Hall in 2018. After leaving Marlborough, Eugenie embarked on a gap year before pursuing studies in Art History and English Literature at Newcastle University, graduating with a 2:1 degree. Kate’s younger siblings, Pippa and James Middleton, also received their education at Marlborough College. Pippa, a talented sportswoman, joined the hockey team and received an all-rounder scholarship. As Prince George approaches the age for secondary education, it has been reported that Marlborough College is among the top choices considered by his parents, Prince William and Kate. However, there are concerns that the school may have become too “flashy” and less aligned with Kate’s values. The Middletons’ previous attendance at Marlborough has also raised concerns about its suitability as a future choice for their grandson. Oundle School, which aligns more closely with King Charles’ environmental initiatives, is also a strong contender for Prince George’s education. Despite these considerations, Marlborough College remains a highly regarded institution with a long-standing reputation for academic excellence and a commitment to developing well-rounded individuals.
