The delicate skin around the eyes is incredibly thin, measuring less than 1 mm thick, and highly sensitive. We unknowingly put our eyes through a lot of stress with an average of 10,000 blinks per day. This makes it crucial to prioritize special care for this delicate area.
“The eye area is a good indicator of whether the skin is dry or not,” says Yolanda Franco, Training Director at Maria Galland Paris. Moisturization is key to maintaining healthy skin, and this applies to the eye area as well. Proper care can help reduce dark circles, puffiness, and wrinkles. “By adequately moisturizing this area, you not only enhance the skin’s natural moisturizing ability, essential for overall skin health, but also reduce signs of fatigue and maintain smoother, plumper looking eyes,” explains Franco.
However, the thinness of the skin around the eyes makes it susceptible to damage from seemingly harmless actions. “Every time you unconsciously rub your eyes, you may be injuring blood vessels. Tiny tears in the skin’s elastic fibers can lead to swelling and the appearance of sagging shadows,” warns Franco. Tears can also dry out the skin around the eyes, leading to increased sensitivity.
“Dryness” is the enemy of dark circles and wrinkles around the eyes. Not properly moisturizing the eye area can compromise its barrier function and weaken its protective capabilities. “Dryness not only makes the blood vessels and dark circles under the eyes more prominent but also increases sensitivity and reduces elasticity,” explains Franco. Another consequence of dryness is wrinkles. “The thin skin around the eyes has low oil content, making it particularly susceptible to dryness. Without a strong barrier, it becomes difficult to combat the effects of UV rays, air pollution, and repetitive facial movements, potentially exacerbating dryness.” Furthermore, dryness can contribute to the appearance of fatigue, a common concern for many.
The Importance of Moisturizing with Eye Care Products
While using a moisturizing cream can offer some protection, incorporating specialized eye care products like eye masks, patches, and serums provides significant value. “The most important thing is to moisturize both morning and night as part of your routine,” advises Franco.
It’s essential to avoid excessive rubbing and unnecessary touching of the eyes. When applying eye care products, gently pat them onto the bone-free areas, avoiding excessive pressure. “It’s crucial to apply the product without getting it in your eyes. If it gets into the eyes, it can cause redness or even increase dryness,” cautions Franco.
