Tensions flared outside the Canadian High Commission in Delhi’s Chanakyapuri on November 3, 2023, as a Hindu-Sikh group staged a demonstration condemning a recent attack on a Hindu temple in Brampton, Canada. The protest, organized by the Hindu Sikh Global Forum, saw over 1,200 Sikhs, including 300 women, participate.
The demonstration turned heated as several Sikh protesters breached the barricades surrounding the High Commission, shouting slogans condemning the violence at the Brampton temple. They accused the perpetrators of trying to sow discord between Hindus and Sikhs. The protest was met with a swift response from Delhi Police, who deployed additional security personnel and barricades outside the High Commission to maintain order. A senior police officer stated, “We have deployed additional force and barricadings have been done outside of the High Commission of Canada following a protest march call. Our teams are not allowing anyone to breach the law and order.”
The Hindu Sikh Global Forum also submitted a memorandum to the Canadian Embassy, demanding immediate investigation and action against the culprits involved in the temple attack. The Forum, in a statement, asserted that the Sikh community has always been actively involved in the construction and upkeep of temples and that the accusations levied against them are a tactic to divide Hindus and Sikhs. The group vowed to never tolerate such divisive attempts.
The incident in Brampton, where protesters carrying Khalistani flags clashed with people at a Hindu temple, sparked widespread condemnation. Both Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada and the Indian government voiced their disapproval of the attack.
The protest outside the Canadian High Commission in Delhi highlights the growing concern and anger over the recent temple attack. It also underscores the sensitivity surrounding the issue of Khalistan, which has historically been a point of friction between India and Canada.
