Protests Turn Violent in Kenya as Parliament Building is Set Ablaze

Violence erupted in Kenya on Tuesday as thousands of protesters, angered by a new finance bill, stormed the parliament building and set part of it ablaze. This marked the most direct attack on the government in decades. The demonstration escalated when police opened fire on the crowd, resulting in five deaths and injuries to 31 others, according to the Kenya Medical Association, an NGO.

The protests, fueled by widespread discontent over the proposed bill, highlight growing frustrations with the Kenyan government’s economic policies. The new finance bill has been met with opposition from many, who argue that it will disproportionately impact the poor and middle class.

The events of Tuesday underscore the deepening political and social tensions in Kenya. The country’s leaders will need to address the underlying causes of these protests to prevent further escalation of violence and unrest.
