PS5 Finally Gets Customizable Backgrounds (Kind Of)

One of the features we missed from the PlayStation 4 was the ability to customize our console themes. It allowed for a bit of personalization, letting us set our own backgrounds and even change the music. Unfortunately, the PS5 initially removed this option, instead automatically changing the background and music as you navigate the dashboard. While this was a bit of a bummer, a new update has brought back at least some customization options.

While you can’t change the background of the main PS5 dashboard, you can now customize the background of the Welcome hub. The Welcome hub, which replaced the Explore tab in an update, is a more customizable space within the PS5 interface. Here’s how to change the background:

1.

Start your PS5 and enter the Welcome hub.

2.

Press the Triangle button on your controller and scroll to the right to find the Change Background icon.

3.

Select the icon and you’ll be presented with a menu of preset backgrounds.

There are three tabs:
*

From PlayStation:

Features artwork related to the PlayStation brand.
*

From Games:

Offers a selection of images from various PS5 games, both single-player and multiplayer.
*

Media Gallery:

Allows you to use your own screenshots as backgrounds.
4.

Choose your desired background, and it will be applied until you decide to change it.

Although it’s not a full-blown theme customization system like the PS4 had, this new option at least allows for some personalization within the Welcome hub. Now, you can add a bit of your own style to your PS5 experience.
