PS5 Pro Prioritizes Performance: 75% of Players Prefer High Frame Rates, Says Mark Cerny

Mark Cerny, the architect behind the PlayStation 5, has shed light on a fascinating insight into player preferences – the age-old debate between graphics and frame rate. While many game developers offer players a choice between Fidelity mode (for stunning visuals) and Performance mode (for smoother gameplay), Cerny reveals that the majority of PS5 users lean towards performance.

According to Cerny, approximately 75% of PS5 players opt for performance modes, prioritizing a smoother and more responsive gaming experience. He emphasized this preference in the PS5 Pro reveal video, stating, “When asked to decide on a mode, players typically choose performance mode about three-quarters of the time.” This insight directly influences the design of the upcoming PS5 Pro, which aims to bridge the gap between high-end graphics and high frame rates.

“Removing that decision, or at least narrowing that divide, is one of the key targets for PlayStation 5 Pro. We want to give players the graphics that the game creators aspire to at the high frame rates that players typically prefer,” Cerny explained.

This focus on performance stands in contrast to Xbox’s approach, where several first-party games have launched with a locked 30FPS frame rate, prioritizing a cinematic experience. While titles like Starfield and Redfall have received 60FPS patches, the initial 30FPS launch highlights a different priority.

The PS5 Pro, however, aims to enable developers to deliver consistent 4K 60FPS gameplay through a combination of a more powerful GPU, Sony’s proprietary AI-upscaling technology called PlayStation Spectral Resolution (PSSR), and enhanced RAM. By providing these tools, Sony intends to cater to the majority of players who crave smooth gameplay without sacrificing visual fidelity.
