In response to heavy rainfall warnings, all schools (government, private, and government-aided) and colleges in Puducherry and Karaikal will remain closed on Wednesday, November 27th. The announcement was made on November 26th by Puducherry Education Minister Arumugam Namassivayam, as reported by ANI news agency. This decision follows the intense rainfall already experienced in parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and the predicted escalation of severe weather conditions.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall alert for the region, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall on November 28th, with conditions continuing through November 29th. This extreme weather event is driven by a deep depression forming over the Bay of Bengal, which is intensifying and could soon develop into a cyclonic storm. According to the IMD’s latest update on X (formerly Twitter), the depression, located 310 km southeast of Trincomalee, Sri Lanka, is expected to move north-northwest and strengthen as it nears the Sri Lankan coast.
In light of the worsening weather conditions, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been deployed in key coastal districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The NDRF has set up teams in Karaikkal, Tiruvarur, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, and Thanjavur. These teams are equipped with the necessary resources, including search and rescue equipment, communication gear, and personal protective gear, to manage emergency situations effectively. The NDRF control room in Arakkonam is actively monitoring developments in coordination with the Tamil Nadu State Emergency Operations Control Room, ensuring a rapid and organized response to any crises.
As the situation continues to evolve, authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and prepared. Updates will be provided as new information becomes available regarding the cyclonic storm and related weather developments.
