The United States launched its Copa America campaign with a convincing 2-0 victory over Bolivia in Group C, thanks to a standout performance from Christian Pulisic. The American captain scored a superb early goal and then provided the assist for Folarin Balogun’s second-half strike.
Pulisic put the US ahead after just three minutes, showcasing his trademark skill and composure. He received a pass from a corner on the left flank, cut inside, and unleashed a powerful shot that found the back of the net despite a diving effort from Bolivia goalkeeper Guillermo Viscarra.
Despite dominating possession, the US struggled to create clear-cut chances in the first half. Bolivia, known for its defensive strength, frustrated the Americans and saw three players – Leonel Justiniano, Gabriel Villamil, and Luis Haquin – receive yellow cards in the opening 31 minutes.
Just before half-time, Pulisic again proved instrumental in extending the lead. Picking up the ball near halfway, he surged towards the Bolivia penalty area and played a deft pass to Balogun, who controlled the ball with a clever touch to outsmart defender Jesus Sagredo and slotted a low shot into the bottom corner.
The US continued to dominate possession after the restart but struggled to add to their lead. Balogun narrowly missed a chance in the 50th minute and then had the ball in the net moments later, only to be ruled offside. Pulisic also drew a fine save from Viscarra in the 60th minute with a fierce shot from inside the penalty area.
Substitute Ricardo Pepi came close to scoring in the 65th minute, seeing his shot roll wide after a cross from Antonee Robinson. Pepi later had another chance in the 90th minute but was denied by a double save from Viscarra.
The victory secures vital three points for Gregg Berhalter’s side as they look to advance from Group C. Their next match is against Panama on Thursday.
