Pulitzer Prize-winning musical ‘A Strange Loop’ has made its West Coast premiere at A.C.T. in San Francisco. The show, which also won a Tony Award, centers around Usher, a young, fat, Black, gay, musical theater writer who works as an usher at ‘The Lion King.’ Inspired by the creator Michael R. Jackson’s own experiences, the storyline explores Usher’s cycling through his self-perceptions and his thoughts taking form around him.
The show’s lead actor, Malachi McCaskill, describes the experience of bringing Usher to life as surreal but also deeply personal. The production encourages audiences to reflect on their own ‘strange loops’ and the power of self-awareness. ‘A Strange Loop’ will be playing at San Francisco’s A.C.T. theater until May 12th and then continuing its limited West Coast run in L.A.
