A juvenile accused in the fatal Porsche crash in Pune has submitted a 300-word essay on road safety, as mandated by his bail conditions. The essay was submitted to the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) on Wednesday. This development comes amidst a massive uproar and political debate surrounding the case. The 17-year-old, the son of a prominent builder, was granted bail by the JJB following the accident. As part of his bail conditions, the board ordered him to write an essay on road safety.
The accident occurred on May 19th when the teenager, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, crashed his Porsche into a motorcycle in Pune’s Kalyani Nagar area, killing two IT professionals. The JJB’s decision to grant bail and impose the essay punishment faced severe criticism, leading to public outcry and political slugfests.
Following the public backlash, the police approached the JJB, seeking an amendment to the order. On May 22nd, the board ordered the minor to be sent to an observation home. However, last month, the Bombay High Court intervened, ordering the release of the juvenile from the observation home. The HC declared the orders remanding him to the facility illegal, emphasizing the need for full implementation of the law regarding juveniles.
Meanwhile, the 17-year-old’s father, Vishal Agarwal, a prominent builder, was arrested by the police of the adjoining Pimpri-Chinchwad township in a separate cheating case on Tuesday. Despite being granted bail by a Pune court in a case concerning alleged kidnapping and wrongful confinement of their family driver after the May accident, he remains behind bars due to the cheating charges. The case continues to generate significant public attention and raises questions about the legal system’s handling of juvenile offenders and the accountability of affluent individuals in such incidents.
