Punjab Farmers Brace for Adverse Weather as Wheat Arrivals Surge

Despite the increased wheat arrivals in Punjab’s mandis on Monday, the Meteorological Department has issued a ‘yellow alert’ in several areas due to an active western disturbance. This adverse weather, including rain, strong winds, and thunderstorms, could lead to significant losses for farmers.

On Tuesday morning, many areas in the state experienced cloudy conditions, with winds expected to reach speeds of 40 kmph. The inclement weather is projected to persist for the next three days.

According to the weather office, an alert has been issued for strong winds, rain, and thunder in Mansa, Sangrur, Barnala, Patiala, Fatehgarh Sahib, Bathinda, Ludhiana, Moga, Ferozepur, Jalandhar, Tarn Taran, Kapurthala, and Amritsar.

While the coming days will be intermittently cloudy with rain providing some relief from the heat, average temperatures are expected to rise.

Specific Weather Forecasts for Major Cities

– Amritsar and Jalandhar will be cloudy with a possibility of rain and strong winds in Amritsar and rain in Jalandhar. Temperatures are expected to range from 20 degrees Celsius minimum to 34 degrees Celsius maximum.
– Ludhiana, Patiala, and Mohali will also be cloudy. A warning of rain and storm has been issued in Ludhiana, while Patiala is forecast to experience rain. Temperatures are expected to vary between 22 and 35 degrees Celsius in Ludhiana, 22 and 37 degrees in Patiala, and 21 and 36 degrees in Mohali.

Light thunderstorms with wind speeds of 30-40 kmph and lightning are likely in several areas across Punjab.

This adverse weather comes after recent hailstorms, heavy rain, and strong winds severely impacted wheat farmers in various parts of the state last Friday. The slow harvesting process has been further delayed by four to five days due to the current weather conditions, raising concerns about substantial losses in many districts.

Meanwhile, 9.26 lakh tonnes of wheat arrived in Punjab’s mandis on Monday, accounting for 27% of the total arrival of 34.14 lakh tonnes thus far.
