The Punjab Police has defended Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s decision to wear a police uniform during a passing-out parade, emphasizing that she is authorized to do so under official regulations. This statement clarifies the controversy surrounding Maryam’s decision, which has drawn both appreciation and criticism.
The police department highlighted that the uniform is a symbol of solidarity with the police force and serves to encourage personnel. They noted that the move has been widely celebrated within the police ranks, with numerous officers expressing their support.
To further support their stance, the Punjab Police cited a notification issued on January 30, 2024, which explicitly permits the governor and chief minister of the province to wear the uniform on formal occasions. This includes parades, police darbars, visits to police establishments, and any other designated events.
However, the decision has also faced criticism from some quarters. Opposition leader in the National Assembly, Omar Ayub Khan, has labeled Maryam’s act as non-serious and suggested that it belittles the country. Despite this, the police department has maintained its support for the chief minister and reaffirmed its commitment to improving law and order and continuing its counter-terrorism efforts.
Meanwhile, a citizen named Waqar Ali has filed a plea challenging Maryam’s right to wear the uniform, arguing that it should be reserved for members of the police force. The court has asked Ali to submit a report from the police station’s front desk and adjourned the hearing until April 29.
