In a move aimed at ensuring safety, Qatar Airways has banned all passengers traveling from Beirut Rafic Hariri International Airport (BEY) from bringing pagers and walkie-talkies onto flights. This ban, effective immediately, covers both checked and carry-on luggage, as well as cargo, and will remain in place until further notice. The airline announced the decision on its social media account, stating it was implemented due to a directive from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation of the Republic of Lebanon.
This new regulation comes in the wake of a series of concerning events in Lebanon. On Wednesday, September 18, 2024, multiple explosions involving walkie-talkies and pagers resulted in at least 20 fatalities and over 450 injuries. The Lebanese Red Cross was heavily involved in rescue operations and evacuating the injured.
In response to the escalating situation, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced targeted strikes against Hezbollah’s terrorist capabilities and infrastructure in Lebanon. The IDF stated on X, their social media platform, that these strikes are intended to diminish Hezbollah’s terrorist potential and restore security to northern Israel. The IDF also criticized Hezbollah for utilizing civilian homes, building tunnels beneath them, and using civilians as human shields, effectively turning southern Lebanon into a conflict zone.
Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant further declared that the country is entering a “new phase” in the war, emphasizing the importance of focusing on the northern front. Gallant stated that their mission is to ensure the safe return of communities in northern Israel to their homes, which requires altering the current security situation.
This unfolding situation continues to generate tension in the region, with both Lebanon and Israel taking steps to address the recent incidents and ensure the safety of their citizens. The ban imposed by Qatar Airways highlights the seriousness of the situation and underscores the need for heightened security measures.
