The White House has emphasized the growing strategic relevance of the Quad, a group comprising the United States, India, Japan, and Australia, ahead of their upcoming leaders’ summit. The summit, scheduled for Saturday, September 21st, will be hosted by US President Joe Biden in his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware.
White House National Security Spokesperson John Kirby highlighted the increasing alignment of Quad members, stating that they are “more strategically aligned and more relevant than ever before.” The Quad focuses on advancing a rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific, advocating for freedom of the seas, and fostering inclusive development. While never explicitly mentioning China, the group’s efforts are seen as a united front against China’s expansionist ambitions and hegemonic designs in the region.
President Biden has expressed enthusiasm for hosting the Quad leaders in his hometown, emphasizing the personal significance of the event. This summit reflects Biden’s broader strategy to strengthen alliances and partnerships during his administration. The Quad Leaders’ Summit has become an annual event since a virtual meeting in Biden’s first 100 days in office. Members also engage at other levels, including foreign ministerial meetings, throughout the year.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India will be visiting the United States from September 21st to 24th, participating in the Quad Summit and addressing the United Nations General Assembly. A bilateral meeting with President Biden is also expected. Former US President Donald Trump has stated that Modi will also meet with him, although the Indian government has not confirmed this. It remains unclear whether a meeting with Vice President Kamala Harris is planned.
Originally scheduled to be hosted by India, the Quad summit was moved to the United States this year at India’s request. The next summit will be held in India in 2024.
