Quentin Tarantino: Star Trek, Toy Story & the Perfect Ending

Quentin Tarantino, the Oscar-winning director known for his unique style and outspoken opinions, recently graced the podcast ‘Club Random’ with his presence. Hosted by Bill Maher, the episode lived up to the hype, as Tarantino delved into various topics, including his controversial Star Trek project and surprising admiration for the Toy Story franchise.

Tarantino’s 2017 pitch for an R-rated Star Trek film, accepted by producer J.J. Abrams, promised a grittier and more grounded take on the beloved sci-fi universe. Teaming up with Mark L. Smith, the writer behind ‘The Revenant’, Tarantino aimed to bring a new edge to the Star Trek mythology. However, the project ultimately fell through, and according to Tarantino, it will never be revived. He attributed the project’s demise to misinformation surrounding it and his deliberate detachment from social media, which he believes fuels unnecessary dialogue.

Surprisingly, Tarantino also revealed a fondness for the Toy Story franchise, stating that he considers the first three films to be a perfect trilogy. Drawing parallels to Sergio Leone’s ‘Dollars’ trilogy, Tarantino highlighted the gradual improvement and thematic depth of each film. He praised ‘Toy Story 3’ as a cinematic masterpiece, citing its emotional impact and devastatingly perfect conclusion. However, this sentiment directly influenced his disinterest in ‘Toy Story 4’. He believes the third installment provided a satisfying and conclusive ending, rendering the fourth film unnecessary, even if it were well-made. His firm conviction in the ‘Toy Story’ trilogy’s finality underscores his belief in crafting films with a sense of completeness and avoiding unnecessary sequels.
