Rahul Gandhi Criticizes Agniveer Scheme, Accuses BJP of Attacking India’s Idea

Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, launched a scathing attack on the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government over the ‘Agniveer’ scheme on Monday. He alleged that the scheme treats soldiers as ‘use and throw laborers’, highlighting the case of an Agniveer who lost his life in a landmine blast but was not recognized as a ‘martyr’.

Gandhi’s statement sparked a heated exchange with Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who vehemently refuted the allegations. Singh asserted that the government provides financial assistance of ₹ one crore to the family of an Agniveer who sacrifices their life while protecting the borders.

The Lok Sabha also witnessed an uproar over Gandhi’s remarks pertaining to the Hindu community. He accused the BJP-led government of systematically attacking the idea of India, the Constitution, and those who resisted the assault. He claimed that individuals who opposed the concentration of power and wealth, aggression towards the poor, Dalits, and minorities were crushed, and he himself was attacked by the government’s order.

Gandhi also took a swipe at the BJP’s understanding of Hinduism, emphasizing the significance of non-violence and fearlessness in Indian religions like Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism, and Buddhism. He contrasted this with what he perceived as the BJP’s promotion of violence, hatred, and untruth, claiming they are not true Hindus.

On Sunday, Gandhi had declared his intention to raise the voice of the people of India in Parliament. He asserted that his personal aspirations and fears were now secondary, as he represents all opposition parties in his role as Leader of the Opposition.
