Rumors abound regarding teams seeking to improve their draft positions in the 2024 NFL Draft, particularly for top quarterback prospects. The Las Vegas Raiders, in need of a franchise quarterback after an underwhelming season with Jimmy Garoppolo and Aidan O’Connell, are reportedly exploring trade options to move up in the draft.
Despite Washington Commanders GM Adam Peters’ initial assertion that the team intends to retain the No. 2 overall pick, sources indicate that the Commanders have fielded inquiries about a potential trade. The Raiders, however, would likely have to surrender significant draft capital to leapfrog teams like the Indianapolis Colts, Chicago Bears, and Houston Texans, who are also pursuing quarterbacks.
Currently, the Raiders hold eight picks in the 2024 NFL Draft, with their highest selections being No. 13 overall in the first round and No. 44 overall in the second round. To move up to the No. 2 spot, they would likely need to offer both of those picks, a presumed 2025 first-round pick, and potentially additional players.
The Commanders, on the other hand, are believed to be highly interested in drafting Jayden Daniels, a top prospect from LSU. While Daniels has met with the Commanders, it is unlikely that he would refuse to play for the team if drafted, as Eli Manning did in the past.
The Raiders have a better chance of trading into the top 10 to acquire a quarterback like Oregon’s Bo Nix or Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy, who could potentially be available at the No. 4 overall pick currently held by the Arizona Cardinals. This year’s draft is expected to witness intense competition among teams seeking to secure their next franchise star at quarterback.
