The Rajasthan police have taken action against those responsible for an alleged interview of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, conducted while he was incarcerated in Jaipur Central Jail. A First Information Report (FIR) has been filed against unidentified individuals in connection with the interview, which aired on a private news channel in March 2023.
The police action comes after recent directives from the Punjab and Haryana courts. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by Punjab police had asserted that Bishnoi was in prison when the interview took place. According to reports, two interviews of Bishnoi were broadcast on March 14th and 16th, 2023, while he was in custody. The SIT’s investigation revealed that at least one of these interviews was recorded from inside Jaipur Central Jail.
Bishnoi was imprisoned in connection with a firing case during this period. The Rajasthan police have confirmed that an FIR has been filed, and the High Court has requested a submission of the SIT report, along with all evidence, by Friday.
Following the airing of the interviews, the then-Jaipur police commissioner, Anand Srivastava, stated that Bishnoi did not participate in any interview while he was in Jaipur.
The case is currently under investigation by the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Gandhi Nagar), Narayan Kumar Bajiya. Further actions will be determined based on the findings of the investigation.
Lawrence Bishnoi was transferred to Jaipur’s jail on February 15th, 2023, from Bathinda jail in Punjab, on a production warrant for questioning in an extortion case. He was placed in judicial custody in Jaipur on March 3rd, 2023, and subsequently returned to Bathinda on March 4th.
