In a surprising move on the final day of the summer transfer window, England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has left Arsenal and joined fellow Premier League club Southampton. The transfer fee is reported to be an initial £18 million ($23.7 million) with Ramsdale signing a four-year deal.
Ramsdale’s departure comes after he lost his starting spot at Arsenal to the newly signed David Raya. While Ramsdale was named in the Premier League’s team of the year two seasons ago, he found himself relegated to the bench last season following Raya’s arrival.
Despite being part of England’s squad at the recent European Championship, Ramsdale was set to be Raya’s backup at Arsenal. However, he has opted for a fresh challenge at Southampton, who are expected to be battling for survival after being promoted from the Championship.
“Coming back down to the south coast as well for me and my family, it would be an easier transition than most, so I feel like I can hit the ground running,” said Ramsdale, referring to his previous time with Bournemouth. “I’m looking forward to this year, just getting back to what I do best and having a big smile on my face while doing it here.”
Southampton manager Russell Martin highlighted the significance of signing an England international like Ramsdale, who has earned five caps for his country. “I’m very grateful to the ownership and the board for making it happen, especially as so many other clubs were keen to get him,” Martin said. “Aaron is obviously a very talented goalkeeper, but also an impressive all-round football player, which is clearly important for us with the way we play.”
Southampton are currently in need of a boost after losing their first two Premier League matches. The arrival of Ramsdale, who brings significant experience and talent to the team, could be just what they need to turn their season around.
