French football legend Raphael Varane has hung up his boots at the young age of 31. The decorated defender, who lifted the World Cup with France in 2018, announced his retirement on Wednesday. His illustrious career saw him make 360 appearances for Real Madrid, where he won three La Liga titles and a remarkable four Champions League trophies. He then moved to the Premier League, joining Manchester United in 2021. During his time at Old Trafford, Varane played 95 games, contributing to the team’s EFL Cup and FA Cup victories. In 2024, he signed with newly-promoted Serie A side Como as a free agent.
Varane’s decision came after a brief but impactful stint at Como. His debut match in August was marred by a knee injury, which ultimately prompted his retirement. In a heartfelt post on Instagram, Varane reflected on his career, saying, “I have fallen and risen a thousand times, and this time, it’s the moment to stop and hang my boots up with my final game winning a trophy at Wembley.” He added, “I have no regrets, I wouldn’t change a thing. I have won more than I could have even dreamed of, but beyond the accolades and trophies, I am proud that no matter what, I have stuck to my principles of being sincere and have tried to leave everywhere better than I found it.”
While Varane is bidding farewell to the pitch, he is not entirely leaving the world of football. He will continue his association with Como, albeit in a different capacity. He explained, “I will remain with Como. Just without using my boots and shin pads. Something I am looking forward to sharing more about soon.” The details of his future role with the club are yet to be announced. Raphael Varane’s retirement marks the end of an era for one of the most talented defenders of his generation. His legacy will forever be etched in the annals of football history.
