It’s a common saying that one person’s trash is another person’s treasure, and that certainly rings true in the world of coin collecting. You might be surprised to learn that some of the coins sitting in your pocket or tucked away in a drawer could be worth a small fortune.
Recently, a TikTok user with the handle @CoinCollectingWizard has been sharing valuable advice on which coins to look out for, and his latest video has generated quite a buzz. He highlighted three 50p coins that could be worth a lot more than their face value, and with good reason – they’re rare.
First up is the 2017 Benjamin Bunny 50p. While most versions are only worth 50 pence, there’s a particularly rare version known as the ‘rotation error’ coin. This coin features the Queen’s head printed facing the wrong direction. Normally, the Queen’s head should be facing to the left on a 50p coin, but on a rotation error coin, it’s facing the opposite way. This unusual error makes the coin worth a considerable sum, with some fetching around £30.
Next, we have the Athletics 50p coin from the London 2012 Olympics collection. There were 29 different 50p coins minted to commemorate the games, and while the Athletics 50p coin is relatively common, a specific earlier version is considered a valuable collectible. The majority of these coins were minted and released in 2011, but an earlier version was minted in 2009. If you happen to have this 2009 version, you could be looking at a potential sale price of £250 or more.
Finally, @CoinCollectingWizard shed light on the Aquatics 50p error coin. This coin, which features lines over the face, could fetch a staggering £2,000. The original design was initially released but then quickly adapted to show the face above water. The scarcity of the original design makes it incredibly valuable to collectors.
The video quickly went viral, sparking a frenzy amongst those who might have these rare coins tucked away in their homes. Many users commented with excitement, eager to learn if they might be holding a valuable treasure. If you have any 50p coins with interesting designs, it might be worth doing some research to see if you’ve stumbled upon a rare gem. You never know – you might just be sitting on a small fortune.
