RCB Hands Over Restored Lakes to Local Community in Bengaluru

In a remarkable display of environmental responsibility, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) has concluded its long-term project to restore the Ittgalpura and Sadenahalli lakes, handing them over to the local authorities. This significant undertaking, launched under RCB’s Go Green Initiative, marks a crucial step towards addressing the pressing issue of water scarcity in Bengaluru.

The project, which began in October 2023, was meticulously designed to enhance drought resilience in areas of Bengaluru severely impacted by water stress. These regions, heavily reliant on groundwater and surface water, often face dire water shortages. RCB, through its Go Green Initiative, aims to create a healthier planet for future generations.

To achieve this ambitious goal, RCB partnered with the India Cares Foundation and Friends of Lakes for the implementation of this project. The nearly 300-day restoration effort involved the removal of over 50,000 tons of silt and sand, much of which was repurposed by local farmers for plantation purposes. This innovative approach further underscores RCB’s commitment to sustainability.

In addition to restoring the lakes, RCB planted over 3,000 trees along the newly widened bunds. These trees will not only contribute to local biodiversity but will also play a vital role in managing flooding, further enhancing the ecological benefits of the project.

With the handover of the restored lakes to the local community, the responsibility for their continued maintenance now rests with the residents. This transfer ensures that the lakes will continue to serve as vital sources of water security and a testament to RCB’s dedication to environmental conservation.

This project stands as a powerful example of how sports teams can make a meaningful impact on their communities. By engaging in sustainable initiatives and collaborating with local stakeholders, RCB has not only improved the environment but also empowered the community to become stewards of their own water security.
