Real and Enhanced IDs: Eligibility and Differences Explained

Obtaining a driver’s license or non-driver ID has become more complex with the introduction of Real and Enhanced IDs. The state DMV has clarified eligibility requirements to guide applicants.

Individuals with non-driver IDs are not required to upgrade to an Enhanced or Real ID. However, holders of non-driver IDs or standard driver’s licenses must obtain a passport or an Enhanced Driver’s License to board domestic flights after May 2025.

Enhanced Driver’s Licenses closely resemble Real IDs. However, Enhanced Driver’s Licenses permit land or sea border crossings into Canada, Mexico, and select Caribbean countries.

Real IDs are priced at $65, matching the fee for a standard driver’s license or renewal. Enhanced Driver’s Licenses cost $95, including transaction fees. Notably, unlike traditional license renewals, Real ID and Enhanced Driver’s License applications must be submitted in person at the DMV.
