Kerala, known for its lush greenery and vibrant culture, is currently facing the brunt of the relentless monsoon showers. The India Meteorological Department (IMD), responsible for weather forecasting, has issued a dire warning for North Kerala, predicting exceptionally heavy rainfall on Monday. In response to this prediction, a red alert has been declared for three districts in the region: Malappuram, Kannur, and Kasaragod. A red alert signifies the potential for extremely heavy rainfall, exceeding 20 cm in a 24-hour period. The IMD’s warning underscores the severity of the expected weather conditions and urges residents to take necessary precautions.
To ensure the safety of students and staff, district authorities in Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod have declared a holiday for educational institutions on Monday. Recognizing the potential dangers associated with the heavy rainfall, Kasaragod district authorities have taken the precautionary measure of suspending all tourism activities.
The heavy rains and strong winds have already wreaked havoc across Kerala, causing widespread damage. Partial damage to houses, minor landslides, and uprooted trees have been reported from various parts of the state. The IMD has also issued an orange alert for Monday in Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, and Wayanad districts, indicating the possibility of very heavy rainfall between 11 cm and 20 cm. A yellow alert has been issued for heavy rainfall between 6 cm and 11 cm. As Kerala continues to battle the relentless monsoon rains, authorities and residents remain vigilant, preparing for the potential challenges that lie ahead.
