Connor Wong and Rafael Devers went deep as the Boston Red Sox rolled to an 8-0 victory over the Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday night, tying the three-game series. Wong hit a pair of solo homers while Devers also went deep and was a triple shy of the cycle. Cooper Criswell pitched five strong innings for the Red Sox, holding the Guardians to only four hits and no runs.
Wong entered the game with three home runs this season and added two more off Cleveland starter Carlos Carrasco (1-2), who allowed nine hits in five-plus innings. Devers, who was back in the lineup after a five-game absence due to a knee injury, homered in the fifth inning to give the Red Sox a 3-0 lead. Wong pushed the lead to 4-0 with his second homer of the night in the sixth inning.
The Red Sox added three more runs in the sixth inning off reliever Tyler Beede, with Devers driving in a run with a ground-rule double and Pablo Reyes and Ceddanne Rafaela adding RBI singles. Criswell (1-1) was impressive in his fourth career start, allowing just three hits and no walks while striking out three batters. The victory ended the Guardians’ five-game winning streak and marked the second time the Red Sox have shut them out this season.
