Red Sox Sign Danny Kirwin to Minor League Contract:
The Boston Red Sox have added hard-throwing right-hander Danny Kirwin to their minor league system, as announced by the Oakland Ballers. Kirwin, who pitched at Rider University from 2019-23, has drawn attention for his impressive velocity and diverse pitch repertoire.
In a video posted by the Oakland Ballers, Kirwin was clocked throwing up to 98 mph. Lucas Still of Tread Athletics has also shared videos of Kirwin, showcasing his ability to throw a slider, changeup, and cutter. A recent bullpen session analyzed by Still revealed that Kirwin’s fastball averaged 95.1 mph, while his cutters averaged 91.8 mph, sliders/sweepers averaged 85.0 mph, sinkers averaged 93.5 mph, and changeups averaged 85.5 mph.
Kirwin’s impressive statistics at Rider University further underscore his potential. During the 2023 season, he posted a 2.32 ERA in 25 relief outings, allowing just 13 earned runs in 50 ⅓ innings pitched. Despite going undrafted in the 2023 MLB Draft League, Kirwin continued to refine his skills in the Coastal Plain League before catching the eye of the Oakland Ballers and ultimately earning a contract with the Red Sox.
Kirwin’s addition to the Red Sox organization provides them with a promising young arm. His ability to generate high velocity and command a variety of pitches could make him a valuable asset in their minor league system and potentially in the future at the major league level.
