Redondo Stars as Short-Handed Inter Miami Defeats Toronto FC

Federico Redondo put on a show for Inter Miami on Wednesday night, scoring his first and second MLS goals and assisting on another in a dominant 3-1 victory over Toronto FC. This performance came as the Florida-based side navigated a series of absences, with Lionel Messi still sidelined following an ankle injury sustained during the Copa America final, and Sergio Busquets serving a red card suspension.

Despite missing key players, Inter Miami showcased their depth and resilience. Diego Gomez also added a goal and an assist, while Julian Gressel contributed two assists, bringing his season total to 12. The victory marks Miami’s fifth in their last six matches, propelling them back to the top of the Eastern Conference standings, surpassing FC Cincinnati, who had defeated Miami in their previous encounter.

The match began with Toronto seemingly the more energized side, with Lorenzo Insigne and Deandre Kerr creating early chances. However, Miami capitalized on a midfield through ball from Redondo, allowing Gomez to slot a shot past goalkeeper Sean Johnson for the opening goal in the 33rd minute.

Redondo doubled the lead in the 53rd minute, heading a Gressel cross into the top left corner. Just six minutes later, Redondo found the back of the net again, this time following a layoff from Gomez off another cross by Gressel.

Derrick Etienne Jr. managed to pull a goal back for Toronto late in the game, but it was too little, too late as Miami secured a decisive victory. The result extended Toronto’s losing streak to seven of their last eight matches, further jeopardizing their playoff aspirations. Despite being winless in their last seven away games, Toronto began the night in eighth place in the East and holding the first wild-card spot.

Miami’s recent success has been particularly impressive considering the absences of Messi and Busquets. Their strong performances demonstrate their ability to compete even without their star players, a testament to the depth and quality within their squad. The victory against Toronto further solidifies their position as a top contender in the Eastern Conference.
